Three years ago, my friend Grant indulged my whim to ride to Ojai in search of a private collection of rare motorcycles. I got us within a block radius of where I thought the shop was and mustering up the courage I started asking anyone I found tooling in their garages where this collection definitively was. The roll up door lifted right as we pulled our bikes up behind a Mini Cooper and much like a stereotypical movie moment, our eyes grew wide and we knew we had stumbled upon something truly special. No one but us was there at that moment, Grant, myself, and the collector, who had loved to talk about the motorcycles he once rode with vigor up and down Ojai's picturesque mountain roads. We shared an hour of so of conversation amongst ourselves before the masses came. Looking back, those 20+ rare Italians (once 300+) became far less important than the man who loved them.
•
I returned to visit over the years, sometimes making the pilgrimage by myself, but often I would bring along trusted friends who shared a love of motorcycles. Sometimes we would swap stories, but more often than not, we would be enraptured by tales of old Hollywood, of Dean Martin's Triumph as his first ride, of cross-country motorcycle road trips and a lifetime of travel, and of the man who stumbled upon photography and whose eye captured countless iconic album covers and celebrity portraits.
•
I was incredibly fortunate to have met and spent time with Guy Webster. He always talked about having me sit for a portrait sometime, and I joked about not wanting a world famous photographer shoot me with helmet hair amongst all of these beautiful people adorning his studio walls.
•
Though his stroke robbed him of his love of motorcycling, it only further instilled a zeal and appreciation for life and for the people within it, including his wife Leone and his children, all of whom he spoke so fondly of during our afternoon chats pointing them out in succession on his office wall. He'd most likely shame me for crying today, for wanting to hear one more tale of a bygone era of Hollywood, and he'd tell me to go ride my motorcycle (as he did in his inscription).
•
Rest in peace, my dear friend.
My #WCW err’day are my motobabes @riderjenny @rokotogo @brittanymorrow and @julialapalme, all pushing hard to kick ass in the male-dominated motorcycle industry. Jenny is a full-time editor at @ridermag; Robyn is a full-time lil’ bit of everything at @motoquest1; Brittany is a rider training coach and dedicated to the #RockTheGear cause; and Julia is a freelance photographer/journalist in not only the moto but the auto industry as well. It doesn’t take much to be motivated in their presence. One day soonish I hope to get them all under one roof. ❤️💃🏻💪🏼
